Earwigs

Treated by our Residential Pest Control

How We Treat Earwigs

Those pincered insects in your basement and garden are earwigs, moisture-loving nuisance pests that wander indoors looking for damp shelter. (One of our added residential services.)

What they look like

Long, flat, reddish-brown bodies up to about 5/8 inch, with a distinctive pair of pincers (cerci) at the rear.

Behavior & biology

Earwigs are nocturnal and drawn to dampness. They hide by day under mulch, stones, and debris, then come out at night to feed on plants and small insects.

Signs of a problem

Sightings in damp basements, bathrooms, and around the foundation, plus ragged feeding damage on garden plants.

Why they’re a problem

Harmless to people. The pincers can give a light pinch but aren't dangerous, so earwigs are mainly a nuisance indoors and a pest in the garden.

Keep them out

Prevention tips for earwigs

1

Reduce moisture and fix leaks indoors and out

2

Clear mulch, leaves, and debris away from the foundation

3

Seal entry points around doors and the foundation

4

Improve drainage so soil dries out near the house
